Exposed: $1.06 Billion Paid to Peer Reviewers of Top Medical Journals

Nearly $1.06 billion was paid to U.S.-based peer reviewers from pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers between 2020 and 2022, according to a JAMA study. Over 58% of reviewers received payments, primarily for research, with millions also earned through direct consulting and speaking fees. The study raises concerns about transparency and conflicts of interest in peer review, which plays a crucial role in determining whether scientific studies are approved or rejected. While journals require disclosure from authors, they often do not require public disclosure from peer reviewers.

📊 Key Stats: 94% of payments were research-related 6% were general payments (speaking, consulting)

Median research payment: $153,173

Median general payment: $7,614
