The FDA is once again moving to ban electrical shock devices used to reduce self-injurious or aggressive behavior, after a prior 2020 ban was vacated by a federal court in 2021. The agency says these devices pose an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury and that labeling changes are not enough. The proposed ban applies only to devices used for self-injurious or aggressive behavior—not other electrical stimulation devices used for different purposes.
